Konza Technopolis has received the Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award at the Esri User Conference held at the San Diego Convention Center.

This global recognition places Konza among the world’s leading organizations for its groundbreaking use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to drive innovation and sustainable development, notably as one of only six African countries honoured with this distinction.

The SAG Award celebrates organizations that leverage GIS technology to solve real-world problems and set new benchmarks for innovation.

Konza Technopolis was recognized for its strategic implementation of GIS across various facets of its development, from urban planning and infrastructure management to environmental monitoring and smart services.

This advanced spatial intelligence is crucial in building a connected and sustainable urban ecosystem.

“This award is a testament to Konza Technopolis’s unwavering commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into the very fabric of our smart city development,” said John Paul Okwiri, CEO Konza Technopolis. Arch Annah Musyimi, Chief Manager-Physical Planning and Compliance added her remarks “Our strategic use of GIS is not just about maps; it’s about creating a living, and empowering a smart city that empowers informs decision-making, fosters efficiency, and ultimately enhances the quality of life for our residents and businesses. This global recognition from Esri validates our vision and motivates us to push the boundaries of innovation even further.”

Konza’s award-winning project centered on two key goals: developing a comprehensive Land Information Management System (LIMS), a digital spatial database for parcel records including cadaster, land use, and property attributes and creating 3D Digital Models and incorporating as-built CAD Drawings of the various horizontal infrastructures onto one platform thus enabling visualization and efficient decision making.

This sophisticated GIS system integrates all departmental operations within the Authority, providing a one-stop-shop for end-to-end land-related transactions, embodying the smart city vision.

Key highlights of Konza’s GIS application include:

  • Integrated Urban Planning:Utilizing GIS for precise land-use mapping, infrastructure development, and zoning to ensure sustainable growth.
  • Smart Infrastructure Management:Real-time monitoring and management of utilities, transport networks, and public services for optimal efficiency.
  • Environmental Stewardship:Employing GIS for environmental impact assessments, resource management, and conservation efforts within the Technopolis.

The technology implemented for these achievements includes ArcGIS Server Enterprise Advanced, ArcGIS Urban Suite online, ArcGIS City Engine, ArcGIS Desktop Advanced, and ArcGIS Online Creator.

The Special Achievement in GIS Awards are presented annually to organizations recognized by Esri for their outstanding work. Konza Technopolis joins a select group of international organizations acknowledged for their innovative application of GIS to address complex challenges and create impactful solutions.
