Kenyan students shine at Huawei Global ICT Competition in China

Kenya’s teams achieved top honours at the recently concluded Huawei Global ICT Competition finals in Shenzhen, China.

During the event, the participating Kenyan students were recognised for their outstanding performance, emerging as winners and runners-up in various categories.

In the Computing category, the Kenyan team claimed first prize. The team comprised Esther Guichaiya and Ephraim Shikanga from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), as well as Mark Omaiko and Ian Omwenga from Machakos University.

In addition, an all-girls team from Kenya won the Special Women in Technology Award at the finals.

Team Kenya also secured Second Prize in the Cloud category at the Global Huawei ICT Competition. The all-girls team consisted of Ifrah Hussein from Moi University, Banzy from JKUAT, and Beverly Ndombi, also from Moi University.

Another Second Prize was awarded to Kenyans in the Network category. The winning team included Rukia Mwari Mohammed from JKUAT, Brian Kipkoech from Machakos University, and Odanga Clemet from the University of Nairobi.

The good news continued for Kenyan students at the global finals, as a team comprising Patricia Gitonga (Instructor) from the University of Nairobi, along with Karimi Muriithi, Denis Syengo, and Peterson Kariuki from Egerton University, secured Third Prize in the Innovation category.

Kenya had over 6,000 registrations, with 12 students making it to the global finals in China.

The Huawei ICT Competition 2024-2025, themed “Connection, Glory and Future,” saw an overwhelming response, attracting over 210,000 students and teachers from more than 2,000 colleges and universities across over 100 countries and regions.

Accompanying the students are Principal Secretary of the State Department of Youth and Creative Economy, Fikirini Katoi Kahindi, and Kenya’s Ambassador to China, Ambassador Willy Bett.

“Thank you, Huawei, for the opportunity, and congratulations to Team Kenya for the resounding victory. May we continue to explore and nurture expertise for the betterment of our beloved country,” said the Principal Secretary.

Since its inception in 2015, over 960,000 students from more than 2,000 colleges and universities in 100 countries and regions globally have participated in the competition.

In this competition, students take part in hands-on labs, workshops, and real-world scenarios, guided by Huawei-certified instructors, as they learn about Huawei technologies in domains such as networking, cloud computing, and AI.

The ICT Competition is open to students in higher education institutions worldwide that partner with the Huawei ICT Academy.
