Kenya’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Willy Bett, recently discussed the differences between the education systems of China and Kenya, noting that Kenya could greatly benefit by emulating China’s successful strategies for achieving impressive development.
During a public lecture in Migori County, Amb. Bett suggested that by implementing the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), Kenya could gain significantly by adopting aspects of China’s approach to nurturing responsible and self-reliant citizens equipped with the skills necessary to advance the nation’s development agenda.
Amb. Bett states that the Chinese education system is transformative, particularly due to its alignment with national development goals. Consequently, he noted that China produces graduates who are well-equipped to contribute to the country’s rapid technological advancements.
He highlighted best practices from China, reiterating that, similar to the Chinese model, the CBC is well-suited for future generations due to its practical, student-centred framework, which allows learners to apply their knowledge to real-life tasks.
Bett noted that the Chinese National Curriculum comprises a comprehensive syllabus followed over six years of primary school, three years of lower secondary school, and three years of senior secondary school, mirroring the structure of the Kenyan CBC education system.
He pointed out that both Kenya and China place a strong emphasis on holistic learning, aiming to equip their students with practical, hands-on educational experiences.
Regarding opportunities, Bett explained that there are numerous scholarships available for Kenyans seeking to study abroad. He underscored the importance of seizing opportunities in China and Australia in fields such as Information Technology (IT), entrepreneurship, and leadership, linking these prospects to the boundless ingenuity of future generations.
Bett further highlighted the unique significance of education, particularly the CBC, praising it as an integral part of the country’s development and a testament to the richness of shared prosperity.
He also urged opinion leaders to instil hope and reaffirm their unity and purpose in overcoming challenges, guiding the nation’s transformative agendas.
“Let us all strive to work together for peace, harmony, and progress in our beautiful state and beloved nation, setting an example for the rest of Africa and the world,” Amb. Bett said.
Reflecting on the strides made by China over the years, the diplomat spoke passionately about the essence of nationalism, stressing the vital role every Kenyan citizen must play in fostering unity and contributing to the nation’s strength and growth.
Ambassador Bett emphasized the importance of selfless service, collective responsibility, and a steadfast commitment to the values that unite the nation, drawing comparisons between Kenya and China.
The diplomat spoke even as statistics indicate China has consistently increased its spending on education, targeting at least 4% of its GDP for this sector. This investment has improved access to education, enhanced its quality, and fostered the development of a highly educated workforce.
The focus on education has resulted in a skilled workforce, particularly in STEM fields, which is essential for driving technological innovation and economic development.
