The Nairobi Polo Club came alive as the country’s premier polo tournament drew players and spectators for what has become one of the capital’s most anticipated sporting and social events of the year.
The 12 Goal Tournament brought together Kenya’s top polo talent, with matches that demonstrated the skill and precision that make polo one of the world’s most demanding equestrian sports. Among the standout players was Hiromi Nzomo, competing with a handicap of one, who emphasised the mental aspect of the game.
“Physically, you just practice all the time. I think more importantly, it’s mental – it’s how you speak to yourself when you play. At least for me, I know that it only works well when I’m encouraging to myself,” Nzomo explained.
When asked about the fundamentals every player must master, Nzomo was clear: “Learning how to mark is probably the most crucial thing because there’s a lot of stuff that happens off the ball, and there are so many ways you can help your team off the ball – and that’s based on marking.”
Perhaps most revealing was Nzomo’s insight into the relationship between rider and mount in polo success. “Polo is like 80 to 90 per cent horses. If you have good horses, you can play very good polo,” she noted, highlighting the critical importance of equine partners in the sport.
Beyond the athletic competition, the tournament served as a showcase for Nairobi’s fashion scene. Guests arrived dressed to impress, with the event attracting those who appreciate both sporting excellence and style. The event reflected polo’s unique position as both competitive sport and social occasion.
The tournament received support from premium spirits brand Tanqueray, reflecting the sport’s appeal to luxury lifestyle brands. “Polo, like Tanqueray, is about harmony and refinement,” said Nancy Nansikombi, Tanqueray Brand Manager. “We are proud to celebrate a sport that embodies the same balance and craftsmanship that defines our gin.”
The connection between gin craftsmanship and polo becomes clearer when considering how both rely on supporting elements. Much like the polo pony serves as the unsung hero of the game, supporting botanicals like chamomile and select citrus fruits provide subtle touches that bring harmony to Tanqueray’s blend.
The success of the tournament indicates polo’s steady growth in Kenya. The combination of equestrian tradition and social gathering continues to attract new participants and spectators to the Nairobi Polo Club.
