The leadership crisis in Machakos County has taken a new turn after Speaker Anne Kiusya returned to the High Court, seeking to overturn orders that allowed nine suspended MCAs to resume their duties.
The Speaker had suspended the nine MCAs for 28 sittings, accusing them of misconduct and breaching assembly procedures.
But a recent court ruling gave the lawmakers temporary relief, allowing them back a move the Speaker now says was rushed and unfair.
Through her lawyer Danstan Omari, Speaker Kiusya told the court that the MCAs failed to disclose key facts when filing their case, and that she was not given a chance to present her side. She wants the orders revoked and the suspensions upheld.
The suspended MCAs include Majority Leader Nicholas Nzioka, Deputy Speaker Stephen Nzue Mwanthi, former Minority Leader Judas Mbili Ndawa, and MCAs Felix Mutunga Ngui, Raphael Nzau, Charles Mbuva, Phoebe Koki, Anna Nthenya Ndilo, and Catherine Kyee.
Beyond the courtroom, the case has sparked political drama in the county. Kinanie/Mathatani MCA Francis Kavyu has accused Governor Wavinya Ndeti of making reckless remarks, claiming she threatened to rally locals to force Speaker Kiusya out of office.
Kavyu warned that such actions could stir unnecessary conflict and break the law.
Lawyer Omari also challenged the Governor, saying if she truly wants to remove the Speaker, she should do so through the legal impeachment process.
“Let her follow the law. We will not allow leadership to be run through threats or illegal shortcuts,” he said.
With the matter back in court and tensions rising, the power battle in Machakos is far from over.
Residents now wait to see how the case unfolds and what it will mean for the future of their county leadership.
