The Alliance Francaise in Nairobi will screen a documentary set in the slums of Mathare, on April 13.
The documentary, ‘Something to Smile About’, follows the lives of a social worker, a basketball player and an artist, and reminds viewers that even when life is unfair, you can always find Something to Smile About”, according to the film’s synopsis.
“The documentary dispels the narrative that Mathare is just a bad place full of crime, drugs, and trash,” organisers at Alliance Francaise said.
Directed by Sam Reng and Peyton Reece the film runs for approximately 90 minutes and is a project supported by Square One Global, a non-profit and student-run organisation at College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University, developing sustainable ventures with communities locally and globally.
The Alliance screening comes ahead of its American premiere on May 3.
“In three chapters, the film portrays the challenges inherent to daily life in the slum and highlights the hope and resilience that residents of Mathare embody. Though there are difficult and emotional moments throughout, each character has a hopeful arc which is tied together in an epilogue with updates from “one year later,” Square One Global said in a statement.
CinemAlliance is a weekly event that takes place every Monday at Alliance.
