Over 200 Bodaboda riders in Mwala Constituency of Machakos County received brand-new electric motorbikes in a landmark empowerment initiative aimed at transforming the sector.

Speaking during the unveiling of the programme at Masii Stadium, Mwala constituency MP Vincent Kawaya said that beneficiaries will own the motorbikes through an affordable repayment plan of 180 shillings per day for 18 months.

The model also includes comprehensive benefits such as health insurance, motorbike insurance, work injury cover and a final gratuity.

Machakos Bodaboda Chairman Allan Musembi noted that the initiative would free many riders from the burden of harsh leasing terms and open up new economic opportunities.

“The time has come to end the exploitation of boda boda riders. For years, financiers have demanded up to KSh 50,000 in deposits and forced riders to pay KSh 500 daily, with no hope of ever owning the bike. This programme changes that story by giving our people affordable ownership and dignity,” Kawaya said.

Machakos Bodaboda Chairman Allan Musembi praised the initiative, noting it would free many riders from the burden of harsh leasing terms and open up new economic opportunities.

The MP also announced plans to construct Bodaboda sheds across Mwala Constituency and, through Spiro, set up battery swap stations at most petrol stations to support the adoption of electric motorbikes.

“This is more than transport empowerment — it is a sustainable economic opportunity for our youth and a pathway to cleaner, greener livelihoods,” Kawaya added.

Additionally, at least 1,500 riders from Mwala will undergo professional training and receive digital driving licences upon completion as part of efforts to enhance safety on the roads.
