Pastor Dorcas Gachagua on Friday closed two medical camps for the widows and people with disabilities (PWDs) in Kajiado County, and also visited a tree nursery established by widows from the area.

Pastor Dorcas pledged to support 18 children with disabilities by paying their school fees for the coming school year.

She said this when closing the two-day medical camp for those with disabilities at the St. Luke Catholic Church Hall in Loitoktok Sub-County, Kajiado County.

She said the children would go through school and school fees would be through the Dorcas Rigathi Foundation.

Pastor Dorcas also urged political leaders to support those with disabilities.

“To our MPs and MCAs, let us look after those with disabilities. Blessings come from such actions,” said Pastor Dorcas.

She also appreciated LionsEyeSight Hospital, the community health promoters and county health officers for supporting the initiative that reached out to hundreds of people with disabilities (PWDs) that included children, teens and grownups.

A few metres away at the DEB Day and Boarding School, Pastor Dorcas held a meeting with more than 800 widows from Kajiado county where a similar medical camp was held targeting the widows.

Pastor Dorcas in the company of the spouse of the Governor of Kajiado, Edna Lenku, and Area MP Samuel Parashina also visited the Osiligi Widows Kajiado South Network tree nursery.

The widows under the network, led by their Chair Elizabeth Senei, have grown 60,000 tree seedlings. They used seeds donated by Pastor Dorcas months ago and are targeting to grow 500,000 seedlings.

Pastor Dorcas commended the widows for their work. She said the office of the Deputy President (ODP) had a target of planting two million trees annually, and they were working towards achieving this goal.

Ms Lenku said women economic empowerment was taking shape in Kajiado County following such initiatives started by the office of the spouse of the Deputy President (OSDP).

“Kajiado County shall light the way for the country in widows’ economic empowerment. Most women in the county did not go to school but such projects will uplift their lives and their families,” said Ms Lenku.

MP Parashina said the seeds Pastor Dorcas Rigathi donated to the Osiligi Widows Network had brought joy and hope in their lives, seeing the healthy tree seedling they had nurtured.

“I believe the women of Osiligi will speak on local and international platforms about this project of greening the environment. We can see the fruits of your hard work, and Kajiado will be a shining example of women empowerment in Kenya,” said MP Parashina.

MP Parashina also appreciated Pastor Dorcas for bringing two medical camps in a remote part of Kajiado County.

“We have seen doctors during this medical camp check the blood pressure and sugar levels of our people, and they have told us that when a disease is detected early, it can be treated,” said MP Parashina.

The OSDP held two medical camps concurrently targeting the widows at DEB Day and Boarding School and at the St. Luke Catholic Church in Loitoktok, Kajiado County.
