Police Service flags off team to National Athletics Championships

The National Police Service (NPS) today officially flagged off its athletics team ahead of the National Track and Field Championships, scheduled to take place from Wednesday, 25th to Friday, 27th June 2025, at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.

The event will mark  the conclusion of the local track and field season.

In his address, the Director of Reforms, Mr John Kamau, AIG, who was representing the Inspector General of Police, Mr Douglas Kanja, reassured the team of the National Police Service’s unwavering support.

He added that the police had dominated athletics for years and had proudly represented Kenya on international stages, including the Olympics.

He expressed optimism that the current team would uphold that legacy.

The Police team features elite athletes such as Olympic finalist 800m World champion Mary Moraa,Abel Kipsang, who will take on the 1500m, rising sprint star Dennis Mwai in the 200m, 800m World under 20 champion  Sarah Moraa,former World  Javelin Champion Julius Yego and pole vault specialists Winny Lagat and Vanice kerubo among others .

As he handed over the official flag to the team, Mr Kamau urged the athletes to remain committed to the task ahead and continue upholding discipline and integrity as true ambassadors of the National Police Service.

On his part, the Chairman of NPS Sports, Mr Stephen Etyang’, AIG, commended the service for its steadfast support of sports and thanked the local organising committee for its efforts.

Also in attendance were the Administration Police Service Sports Director, Mr Ramadhan Omar, AIG; Vice Chairperson, Athletics NPS, Mr Joseph Chirchir, CP; Director of Sports KPS, Mr Isaac Sang, SSP; and NPS Athletics,Team Manager, Mr Muriuki Raria, SSP, among other senior officers.

Police will compete with other 15 AK affiliate regions during the 3 day national championships  at  the Ulinzi Complex.
