Correctional Services PS Dr. Salome Beacco led the distribution of food and non-food items to vulnerable groups in Gatundu South Constituency on Thursday, benefiting over 1,200 residents.
The initiative comes after the failure of the short rains left many households facing food shortages following widespread crop losses.
The Kenya Meteorological Department had forecast below-average rainfall, which resulted in poor harvests across the area.
Speaking during the exercise, the PS said the intervention followed a directive from President William Ruto, who had expressed concern over the impact of the failed rains on vulnerable communities.
She said government officers had been mobilised to engage directly with affected residents and provide immediate assistance as authorities assess longer-term mitigation measures.
The relief programme, she said, is intended to cushion households from the effects of the poor harvests while broader interventions to address food insecurity are being considered.
Residents welcomed the support, saying the assistance would help them navigate the current food shortages caused by the failed rains.
