In 2025, podcasting has firmly established itself as a dominant medium in Kenya, with substantial growth across demographics and regions. According to data from Spotify, the country’s appetite for on-demand audio content has resulted in a thriving podcast scene, with Nairobi remaining the central hub of activity.
Some of the key statistics and trends indicate that Nairobi remains Kenya’s cultural and digital epicentre, accounting for over 93% of all podcast streams in the country.
The largest consumer group is Gen Z (ages 18–29), who make up nearly 50% of the audience, followed by millennials. Podcast consumption is also notably balanced between genders, with women representing 50% of listeners and men 49%, signalling an equal interest across both groups.
The rise of the podcast craze is anchored by popular shows such as “So This Is Love”, “The97sPodcast”, “Mic Cheque Podcast”, “The Messy Inbetween”, and “The Mkurugenzi Podcast”. These programs explore a range of topics, from culture and identity to music and personal stories, reflecting the diverse interests of Kenyan listeners.
The Society & Culture genre – from which most of the popular podcasts lie – lead the charge, catering to an audience that values authentic narratives around love, friendship, and everyday life.
Other rising genres include True Crime and Business.
Newcomers and emerging voices
The surge in podcasting has also been driven by fresh voices, with shows like “That’s What She Said! Podcast”, “Listen, I Have Something to Say”, and “BTW Podcast” by Celestine, which have seen rapid growth in listeners. Celestine’s podcast, in particular, has experienced an astounding 10,000% increase in growth, highlighting how new creators are gaining significant traction in a relatively short period.
Some of the listening habits and regional Growth highlighted in the report show clear patterns, with peak listening times typically falling between 8 AM and 6 PM, suggesting that podcasts are becoming integrated into daily routines, serving as companions during commutes, work breaks, and study sessions. The rise of business-related content further reflects this trend, as listeners seek out podcasts for both professional insights and leisure.
While Nairobi remains the dominant city for podcast listening, other regions are seeing growth. Mombasa, Nakuru, Thika, and Kilifi have all reported increasing podcast audiences, with midweek engagement (especially on Tuesdays and Wednesdays) reaching its peak.
