The Sixth Absa Kip Keino Classic Continental Tour lived up to its billing of a World gold label series event on Saturday, despite the last minute switch of venue from Nyayo to the Ulinzi Sports Complex.
Organisers did a splendid job ensuring the status of the meet wasn’t compromised, inviting top field athletes as well as promising track athletes which in total attracted 189 athletes from different Nationalities.
Some top performances were recorded on Saturday with two new world leading time and distance and another two new meeting records falling.
After leading the South African 4x400m men’s team to gold at the World Relays, Zakithi Nene won the 1 lap race in a world-leading time of 43.76, comfortably within the qualification time for the Tokyo World Championships.
Canadian Ethan KATZBERG claimed victory in men’s hammer throw with a World leading throw of 82.73m.
Amalie IUEL of Norway won the women’s 400m Hurdles with a new meeting mark of 54.80.
Four Kenyan athletes and Wiseman Mercy Oketch, Lillian Odira, and Sarah Moraa qualified for the Tokyo World Athletics Championships on Saturday, with Oketch breaking the national 400m record in the process.
Summarily 45 PB’s and 49 SB’s were registered during the sixth Absa Kip Keino Classic World Continental tour gold meeting.
Spectators and attendees went satisfied, cheering loudly for their beloved super stars.
Congratulations to the meet organisers, led by the Sports Ministry and Athletics Kenya, and everyone who made sure the event met international standards.
