In preparation to accommodate anticipated large numbers of fans and tourists for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the Tanger Med Port in Morocco will undergo major expansion set to be completed by 2028.
According to the officer in charge of the Port Call Optimisation Manager, Hicham Haroufi, the expansion, which is set to be concluded in 2028, includes the construction of a passenger terminal in Tanger Med 2 port, which will be used to transport fans from Europe via Spain to Tanger City during the 2030 FIFA World Cup, to be co-hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal.
“The Tanger Med Port is constructed on a 5,000-hectare piece of land, with the current utilisation standing at 3,000 hectares and another 2,000 hectares set aside for investors and future expansions.” Haroufi stated,

The port was constructed under the public-private partnership model in 2003 and began its operations in July 2007 and connects 170 countries worldwide.
“The industrial platform is around 5,000 hectares. We are now using around 3,000 hectares, and 2,000 hectares are still free space to be developed in the following years.” Said Haroufi
“We expect to double its capacity to 60,000 passengers per day to handle the large number of passengers expected in Morocco for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.” He added
The port is operated by the Tanger Med group, which is the largest industrial port operating company in the world.
Tanger Med Port is key for Morocco’s exportation of Renault and Peugeot vehicles, with the production plant producing about 1,600 cars per day, targeting major European markets.
