The Senate is set to commence impeachment proceedings against Kericho County Governor Dr Erick Kipkoech Mutai this morning.
The Senators will be tasked with determining the validity of various charges brought against Governor Mutai, including gross violations of the Constitution, abuse of office and gross misconduct.
The three-day session will kick off with a pre-hearing meeting for Senators in a closed session from 9:00 am to 10:00 am, followed by preliminaries and reading of charges and opening statements by both parties
The hearings will be done in the plenary of the full House. The county boss will be required to enter a plea, either admitting or denying culpability.
The Kericho County Assembly will then present its case first, setting out evidence and arguments to justify the removal of the Governor.
The Governor, through his defence team, will then be allowed to respond, countering the accusations by the County Assembly. The Senate will then debate the Motion before casting a decisive vote on Friday to either uphold or dismiss the charges.
The charges facing Governor Mutai include; gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, abuse of office and gross misconduct.
This marks the second time in less than a year that Governor Mutai is facing impeachment proceedings before the Senate.
