The County Government of Turkana has officially assumed the management of the Kalobeyei modern Garage, during which Governor Lomorukai announced that the facility will be used to drive youth and women empowerment through skills development, training, and employment.

During the first day of his development tour of Turkana West, Governor Lomorukai received the keys to the facility from Linner Ng’eno of the UN Women to symbolize the handover in a ceremony witnessed by Deputy Governor Dr John Erus and other senior county officials.

According to the Governor, the County would roll out a detailed plan and several programs aimed at enhancing the utilization of the facility in due course.

“As a county, we appreciate UN Women and Peace Winds Japan for their investment and support to this Garage. We intend to use it to empower youth and women in this location and beyond,” the Governor said.

While reiterating the position of the Governor, UN Women’s Operations Manager Linner Ng’eno emphasized that UN Women’s goal is to diversify opportunities for youth and women in the quest for economic transformation.

She expressed optimism that the facility will serve its purpose while promoting cohesion between the host and the refugees.

In the inspection prior to the handover, vehicle diagnostics equipment alongside other modern installations using cutting edge technology were showcased to demonstrate the capacity of the facility to run as a training institution and a commercial garage.

It is expected that the garage will immediately open new avenues for young women seeking to enter the the motor vehicle mechanics space as entrepreneurs or skilled service providers.

The County Secretary Amb. Richard Ekai led senior county officials who accompanied the Governor.

A host of MCAs led by Deputy Speaker Gilbert Topos were also present.
