Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome has stated that the Kenya Kwanza’s ambitious plan to deliver one million affordable housing units by 2027 will become a reality.
The initiative is a central pillar of President William Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, aiming to address the country’s significant housing deficit, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth.
The CS noted that while some members of the political class have resorted to disparaging the project, President Ruto’s administration is committed to fulfilling its promise to the Kenyan people.
“Let’s put politics aside for now. Some are opposing the Affordable Housing project, claiming that if they come to power, they will end it. They say to listen to the ground… listen to me; I am here. By 2027, we will have built one million housing units,” she said while in Laikipia.
The government aims to construct 200,000 housing units annually.
On Tuesday, President William Ruto handed over 1,080 affordable housing units to residents of Mukuru in Nairobi. These units are part of the transformative 13,248-unit New Mukuru Housing Estate, which is set to become the largest real estate development in Kenya’s history.
The President commissioned Lot 1-Phase 1, featuring over 5,616 bedsitters, with construction of Lot 2 and Lot 3, comprising 3,024 one-bedroom and 4,608 two-bedroom units respectively, already underway.
According to Wahome, the 1,080 units in Mukuru are just the beginning.
“In Mukuru alone, we’re aiming for 13,000 units — and at least 200 homes in every constituency across the country. A better, more dignified future is within reach for every Kenyan. Let’s build it together,” she said.
