The weatherman has announced the start of the onset of the short rains season of October, November to December, warning that the rainfall currently affecting parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and Highlands West of Rift Valley is expected to intensify to more than 30millimeters beginning Thursday.

In an advisory, the Kenya Meteorological Department says that the rainfall is expected to spread to the Highlands East of Rift Valley, including Nairobi County, and parts of the Southeastern lowlands.

“The heavy rainfall is expected to continue and extend to parts of the Northeast from Thursday, 30th October 2025,” says the Director of Meteorological Service, Edward Muriuki, and adds, “This is likely to mark the Onset of the Short Rains Season of October, November to December (OND) 2025 over several parts of the country.”

The public is advised to be on alert in the counties of; Counties: Kisumu, Homabay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga and Bungoma. The others include; Narok, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West-Pokot Turkana, Isiolo and Samburu. The rest are: Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, Nairobi and parts of Kajiado, Machakos and Makueni.

“Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential floods as flood waters may appear in places where it has not rained heavily especially those living downstream,” says Muriuki.

The public is also advised to avoid driving through or walking in moving water, open fields and to avoid taking shelter under trees and near grilled metallic windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.

“People in landslide-prone areas, especially over the slopes of Aberdare ranges, Mt. Kenya, and other sloppy areas over the western Kenya region should be on high alert,” says the Weatherman in a statement sent to newsrooms.

The Director is urging the public to follow continuous updates made by the Kenya Meteorological Department.
