A section of youth joined the National Heroes’ Council and presidential awardees at the Machakos GK Prison for a tree planting exercise aimed at enhancing the country’s forest cover and conserving the environment.

The initiative, which brought together the Kenya Prison Service and heroes recognised by the Head of State, is part of efforts to combat the climate crisis through afforestation.

Speaking during the event, National Heroes’ Council Chief Executive Officer Charles Wambia called for partnerships with various institutions to increase forest cover and mitigate the effects of climate change.

He noted that such collaborations with young people and various stakeholders are vital in boosting environmental conservation efforts across the country.

During the exercise, over 5,000 trees were planted within the Machakos GK Prison compound.
