Zanzibar has suffered a major loss following the death of Government Chief Spokesperson Charles Hillary, who passed away after a short illness.
Hillary was appointed by the President of Zanzibar, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, as the Government Chief Spokesperson in 2023. Prior to that, in 2021, he served as the Director of Presidential Communications—a key position through which he managed and coordinated the government’s official communications.
Before joining the Zanzibar government, Charles Hillary was an experienced journalist who worked with both international and local media outlets, including the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and Azam Media, where he earned great respect for his professionalism and journalistic excellence.
His death has been officially announced by the Zanzibar government, with national leaders, fellow journalists, and citizens expressing their deep sorrow and remembering him as a visionary public servant and journalist who made significant contributions to the nation.
