The construction of the Chuka Modern Market in Tharaka Nithi County, which began in October 2024, is now 58pc complete and already transforming the local trading landscape.
The three-tier facility will accommodate 373 traders, 254 in the basement, 113 on the upper ground floor and 6 on the first floor, offering structured, dignified and weatherproof spaces for business.
Designed with both scale and utility in mind, the market is a critical node in regional trade, poised to streamline agricultural produce distribution, attract investment and improve the daily operations of small enterprises, says Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary for Ministry of Interior and National Administration.
The market is already stimulating the local economy through construction jobs, supply contracts and increased demand for goods and services in Chuka town.
“As a strategic investment under the government’s broader effort to modernise market infrastructure, the project speaks directly to the goals of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), empowering traders, enhancing food systems and driving inclusive economic growth across the region”, he said.
