Thirty-six individuals linked to coordinated attacks on government infrastructure during the recent protests have been charged with terrorism.
According to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), 24 of the suspects were arrested for executing a terrorist act that led to the destruction of property at the Kikuyu Law Courts, Kikuyu Probation Offices, the Chief’s Office, and several other government facilities during the June 25 protests.
Among the accused are two political allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Peter Kinyanjui Wanjiru, alias Kawanjiru, and Serah Wanjiku Thiga.
They were also charged with arson and malicious damage to property.
The court heard that 10 other suspects were arrested in Matuu, Machakos County, in connection with a similar incident on June 25.
They allegedly attacked Matuu Police Station, causing extensive damage, including the destruction of police vehicles.
All the accused pleaded not guilty before Senior Principal Magistrate Gideon Kiaga.
The DPP opposed their release on bond, arguing that the suspects pose a flight risk as they do not reside in the areas where the crimes were committed, and were part of a well-coordinated plot targeting government infrastructure.
