Former Chesumei Member of Parliament Elijah Lagat has died.

Lagat passed away on Monday night at Eldoret Hospital in Uasin Gishu County after a short illness.

The former lawmaker, who also served as Emgwen MP, had a distinguished career in both politics and athletics.

In Parliament, Lagat served as Vice Chairman of the Labour and Social Welfare Committee, Chairman of the Sports Sub-committee, Vice Chairman of the Catering and Health Services Committee, and Chairman of the Health Services Sub-committee.

He also held the position of Deputy Human Resources Manager in Nandi County for five years.

Lagat was also celebrated internationally as a gifted athlete having won the 2000 Boston Marathon and represented Kenya in major athletics events across the globe.

Nandi Governor Stephen Sang mourned him as a leader whose legacy will endure.

“Lagat was a distinguished leader whose legacy will remain forever. We shall remember him, not only as an MP but also as a person who served everyone with dedication and humility; and also as a great athlete,” said Sang.

“As a legislator, Lagat was deeply committed to dialogue and inclusivity. He led with wisdom, always engaging in wide consultation to ensure the voices of his constituents were respected and represented,” he added.

Funeral arrangements are underway and the family is expected to announce the burial date.
