Kenya has sought support from the government of Luxembourg to leverage Nairobi’s strategic position as UNEP’s host city to enhance the treaty’s global impact.
In a bilateral meeting with Xaver Bettel, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Luxembourg, Kenya’s Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Muadavadi highlighted Kenya’s bold leadership in banning plastics and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to advancing global environmental action.
He noted that Nairobi’s growing global stature will be showcased further when it co-hosts the Africa–France Summit in May 2026, the first time the summit will be held outside France or a francophone African nation.

Further, the two leaders agreed to deepen bilateral ties with CS Mudavadi encouraging Luxembourg to establish a diplomatic mission in Nairobi to expand engagement between the two nations.
Prime CS also urged Luxembourg to back Kenya’s push to exit the Financial Action Task Force grey list, outlining the legislative and institutional reforms already undertaken, and noted our upcoming International Monetary Fund Governance Diagnostic Report expected later this year.
