Blankets & Wine has unveiled a star-studded artist line-up for its “Kenyan Summer 2025 edition”, even as its founder, Muthoni “MDQ” Ndonga, faces a formal summons from the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK).
The festival’s December 21 show, set for Laureate Gardens, Kasarani, features heavyweight names in African music, including South Africa’s Scorpion Kings, Tanzania’s Marioo, Kenya’s chart-topping Afro-fusion star Iyanii, UK funky-house pioneer Donae’o, Kenyan rap-dance crew Matata, and South Africa’s house-jazz-soul trio MiCasa.
Local talent also includes Okello Max, Bridgit Blue, Elsy Wameyo, Ssaru and Shad Mziki, plus a late-night Onja Onja Stage line-up with Foozak, Tina Ardor, Ms Mika, Darkfruit and Shishi, capped by a back-to-back finale from Aly Fresh, Mura and Big Nyagz.
This announcement, welcomed by fans of the music event, comes against a backdrop of regulatory scrutiny.
CAK has formally summoned Ndonga and Good Times Africa, the festival’s parent company, following a consumer complaint about the festival’s previous edition. The complaint, filed by lawyer Francis Wanjiku, alleges service and operational shortcomings at the September 28 Kasarani show.
Despite the summons, organisers say they are addressing those concerns ahead of the December event, prioritising production and operational improvements.
“For years, we’ve worked steadily to delight audiences through great artistry and solid production,” said Muthoni Ndonga, Creative Director. “Now, we’re focused on refining operations and elevating every touchpoint, from sound and staging to hospitality and accessibility.”
Sharing similar thoughts, Justine Mbugua, Head of Festivals, added: “Each edition is a building block toward a stronger cultural ecosystem. Our commitment to improved service and a seamless experience for festivalgoers has never been higher.”
The 2025 edition will mark Blankets & Wine’s 17th year. Returning features include the Onja Onja Market, a curated showcase of Kenyan creativity spanning fashion, food, art and lifestyle, which organisers say will give festivalgoers the chance to support local brands and artisans.
Tickets for Kenyan Summer 2025 are on sale through the festival’s official channels.
