Worldreader and Pottermore on Saturday hosted Kenya’s first-ever Harry Potter–themed tea party at Imaara Mall, drawing more than 500 families for a day dedicated to reading and celebrating young learners.

The event recognised children who completed all 17 chapters of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” on Worldreader’s free BookSmart app, with each “Reading Champion” receiving a physical copy of the book in honour of their achievement.

The celebration marked a major milestone in the ongoing partnership between Worldreader and Pottermore, supported by Tatu City and Co-operative Bank of Kenya, aimed at strengthening literacy and reading culture across the country.

Imaara Mall was transformed into a vibrant, themed space featuring décor, photo booths and interactive activities, as cheering families gathered to witness the recognition ceremony.

Children who finished the reading challenge were invited on stage to receive their books before an enthusiastic crowd.

Speaking during the event, Lisa McManus, Senior Curriculum Designer at Worldreader, praised the commitment shown by the young readers and their families.

“We witnessed the power of stories. Seeing hundreds of children complete their very first full-length novel, and many doing so with their families, has been inspiring. Access truly opens doors, she said.

She also highlighted how important it was for children to have access to books.

“When children have great books at their fingertips, they flourish,” she said, adding that the organisation was proud to honour the young readers.

The event also highlighted the broader challenge of accessing books in many Kenyan households.

Through BookSmart, families can access more than 2,700 free children’s titles in English and Kiswahili, including “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”, available on Android, iOS and the M-PESA Super App.

Worldreader emphasised that as little as 10 minutes of daily reading can significantly boost literacy, creativity, vocabulary and school readiness.

The event featured reading activities, themed photo opportunities, games and speeches from organisers and partners, creating a festive environment that brought families together from across Nairobi.
