He said the publication, “The Price of Freedom”, documents a defining chapter in the country’s history.

“Later today, I will have the privilege of launching Achieng’ Oneko’s biography, ‘The Price of Freedom,’ an important publication that preserves his legacy and a defining chapter in our nation’s history,” he said.

Oneko was among the Kapenguria Six, alongside Jomo Kenyatta, Bildad Kaggia, Fred Kubai, Kung’u Karumba and Paul Ngei, who were arrested by British colonial authorities in 1952 during the struggle for independence.

Ruto said the struggle was about more than ending colonial rule, but also securing freedom, dignity and the right of Kenyans to determine their own future.

He also reflected on the meaning of heroism today, calling on Kenyans to recognise the contributions of people whose service and courage continue to shape the country.

“We gather to honour the men and women of Kenya whose determination and courage gave the Republic we produly call home,” he said at the beginning of his speech.

The annual Mashujaa Day celebrations honour Kenyans who have made significant contributions to the country’s history and development, from the independence struggle to public service and community leadership.

Oneko’s biography is expected to preserve his place in that history.
