BRICS should focus on inclusive economic growth, stronger trade among member countries and people-centred development, Zanele Sabela, Spokesperson for the Congress of South African Trade Unions, said in an exclusive interview with Soweto TV, a partner of TV BRICS.
Sabela said the 2026 BRICS Summit should help advance the priorities for which the group was established, with particular attention to economic cooperation among its members.
“In terms of the 2026 BRICS Summit, we’re expecting the issues that the group was formed to address to be taken forward. We are looking at discussions on inclusive economic growth, as well as intensifying intra-BRICS trade,” she stated.
She also highlighted South Africa’s role in strengthening Africa’s participation in BRICS. According to Sabela, the country’s involvement has helped bring more African countries into the group and ensure that the continent’s perspectives are represented.
“It has contributed to bringing more African countries into BRICS and ensuring that Africa’s voice is heard within the group,” she said.
The spokesperson stated that the next stage should focus on the practical contribution BRICS can make to its member states, including through cooperation on sustainable development.
“It is now time to see what BRICS can actually achieve for its member states,” she stated.
Zanele Sabela also highlighted green development and climate action as areas that should remain part of the BRICS agenda, alongside a stronger focus on people.
