Chebet completes double as Kipyegon takes silver in 5000m final in Tokyo

Beatrice Chebet produced a sprint finish to lead Kenya in a 1-2 finish completing a women’s double in 5000m final on the penultimate day of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo,Japan on Saturday afternoon.

Chebet crossed the finish line in 14:54.36, ahead of World 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon who won silver with a personal best time 14:55.07, while Italian Nadia Batocletti settled for a bronze in 14:55.42.

Interestingly all podium finishers in Saturday’s 12.5 lap final claimed their 2nd medal in the Tokyo World Championships.

The double olympic champion in 5000m and 10,000m becomes the 1st woman to complete a double at the Olympics and World over the two distances .

The 24 year old also holds the World records in both 5,000m and 10,000m and is the 2nd Kenyan woman to win gold in both 5000m and 10,000m since Vivian Cheruiyot in 2011.

Kenya still holds 2nd position in the medal table with 5 gold 2 silvers and 2 bronzes.
