Youthful sensation Dorcus Ndiema won her first senior career major cross country after she claimed victory in 10 km at the 3rd Great Chepsaita Cross Country run held on Saturday in Turbo Constituency, Uasin Gishu County.

18-year-old Ndiema led from gun to tape as she endured the uphill and downhill terrain course to claim victory in the 5-lap race, stopping the clock in 35 minutes 44 seconds.

Brenda Jepchirchir finished 2nd in 36:31, ahead of Faith Cherono, who completed the podium positions.

Speaking after the win, Ndiema said. “The race was tough, but I pushed myself, and I’m happy to win this race. Last year, I was in the under-20 category and finished seventh. My transition from the ISF cross country to the senior category has been great.”

177 athletes competed in the race, which saw Ndiema pocket KSh 750,000, while Jepchirchir took home KSh 500,000.

The race patron, Farouk Kibet, hailed the initiative, which has seen many school-going children get scholarships.
