The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has defended its recent operation in Kitale, which led to the arrest of Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.
EACC CEO Abdi Mohammud stated that the commission acts strictly within the law and that the arrest followed a year-long investigation.
He further noted that the arrest was not politically motivated, as a section of the political class would argue adding that such misguided views undermine the fight against corruption.
Mohammud spoke on Wednesday during the ethics and integrity conference held in Nairobi.
Natembeya was dramatically arrested in Kitale and arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts for an alleged irregular procurement and fictitious payments of Ksh 1.4 billion by the County Government of Trans Nzoia during the Financial Years 2022/2023 and 2024/2025.
At the same time, the commission has received and opened investigations into 549 reports of forgery involving academic and professional certificates.
Of these, 134 investigation files have been completed, with 85 forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and 33 cases currently pending in court.
Twenty cases have been concluded, resulting in 13 convictions and 7 acquittals.
