Five individuals from Sagat, Kasemoi, and Marich sub-locations in Tot Division, Kerio Valley Sub-County, have voluntarily surrendered five illegal firearms to security agencies.
The handover which took place on Monday, September 15, included included three AK-47 rifles, each with an empty magazine, one AK-47 with a magazine loaded with eight rounds of ammunition, and another with a magazine containing five rounds.
Police confirmed the weapons are now secured pending further administrative action even as the disarmament campaign continues in the north rift region.
In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) lauded the residents for what it termed a bold step toward enhancing peace in the region.
“The National Police Service commends these individuals for this bold step and appreciates the support of local leaders and communities in advancing peace and security in the Kerio Valley,” the NPS said.
Security agencies have called on members of the public to continue surrendering illegal firearms and provide information that could support disarmament and crime prevention.
“Members of the public are encouraged to emulate this gesture by surrendering any illegal arms in their possession and by sharing information that may assist in disarmament and crime prevention.”
