Former Tanzanian Prime Minister Cleopa David Msuya has died at the age of 94, President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced on Wednesday.
Msuya passed away at 9:00 a.m. while undergoing treatment for cardiac complications in Dar es Salaam.
“The nation has lost a great patriot and statesman,” said President Hassan, who declared seven days of national mourning from May 7 to 13. During this period, all national flags will fly at half-mast.
Msuya served as Tanzania’s prime minister twice—first from November 7, 1980, to February 24, 1983, and again from December 7, 1994, to November 28, 1995. In addition to his role as head of government, he held several key cabinet positions, including Minister for Finance, Economic Affairs and Planning, and Minister for Industry and Trade.
A respected figure in Tanzania’s post-independence political landscape, Msuya was widely regarded for his dedication to public service and nation-building.
His death comes just months after the passing of another former prime minister, Edward Lowassa, who died on February 10, 2024, at the age of 70 following a long illness.
