The Kenya Meteorological Department says the ongoing rainfall is likely to continue over several parts of the country, “with isolated heavy rainfall events expected over some parts of the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi, Lake Victoria Basin, Southeastern lowlands and North-eastern Kenya.
According to the Weatherman in the seven-day forecast, the counties of Trans Nzoia, Elgeyo Markwet, Kakamega, Vihiga Nandi, Nyamira, Kisii, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kiambu, Nairobi, Kericho, Uasin Gishu, Machakos, northern parts of Mandera county, parts of Narok and Kajiado counties are expected to receive heavy rainfall during the week.
In the forecast, the Director of Meteorological Services Dr. David Gikungu says that average daytime temperatures of more than 30°C will be experienced in the Coast, North-eastern and Northwestern Kenya, while “average night-time temperatures will be less than 10°C in some parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley and around Mt. Kilimanjaro.”
April marks the peak of the long rains season of March to May. The Weatherman has warned the public against crossing swollen rivers to avoid drowning. The public is also asked to avoid sheltering under trees not walking through open spaces during a downpour to avoid lightning strikes.
The rainfall may lead to slippery roads and poor visibility, especially on days with heavy rainfall. “Motorists are therefore advised to be careful on the roads to minimize accidents,” says Dr. Gikungu.
