Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale today launched the first 100 fully electric vehicles from auto dealer MojaEv at the company’s offices in Nairobi.
He stated that MojaEV’s entry into Kenya’s growing e-mobility market with its Skyworth and NETA vehicle brands represents a significant step towards reducing emissions and enhancing air quality in urban areas.
“The introduction of 100 electric vehicles exemplifies Kenya’s commitment to transforming transportation in line with our climate goals. MojaEV’s leadership signifies our broader vision for a low-carbon, climate-resilient future as outlined in Vision 2030 and the NCCAP,” stated the CS
“MojaEV’s leadership is a significant step, but broader transformation requires all businesses to embrace sustainable practices. My Ministry is dedicated to fostering partnerships that lead us towards a resilient Kenya, where both people and nature can thrive,” he added
He urged the private sector to recognise that Kenya’s green transition relies on their collective efforts alongside the government. As electric vehicles take to the roads, Duale notes they represent Kenya’s commitment to a sustainable and prosperous future.
“Thank you, MojaEV, for spearheading this transformation. Let us celebrate this milestone as a bold step towards a cleaner Kenya,” he said
The Environment CS disclosed that the transportation sector, which consumes approximately 80% of the petroleum products imported into Kenya, is responsible for about 10% of our national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Without decisive action, he said this figure could rise to 17% by 2030 due to population growth and industrialization among other factors.
Thus, the increased adoption of electric vehicles will significantly lower emissions from the transport sector, aiding Kenya in meeting its national emission reduction targets.
“The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry is taking decisive action against rising emissions by prioritizing low-carbon technologies, particularly the adoption of electric vehicles under the National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP) 2023-2027. This initiative will substantially reduce transportation sector emissions, helping us achieve our national climate targets,” said Duale
The transition to e-mobility is a key element of Kenya’s Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS), the updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), and the third National Climate Change Action Plan (NCAP III), all of which were launched last year by H.E. President Dr. William Ruto at the inaugural Africa Climate Summit.
He further noted that electric vehicles also offer financial relief for taxi drivers, who often struggle with limited access to conventional banking services.
“By providing an affordable, sustainable fleet, we will alleviate their financial burdens while advancing our environmental objectives,” he said
At the launch event, the Cabinet Secretary was accompanied by Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Gladys Boss Shollei and Industry PS Dr. Juma Mukhwana.
