In a historic first, Makueni County has achieved a breakthrough in healthcare after local doctors at the Makueni County Referral Hospital have successfully conducted the first brain tumour surgery, an achievement many once thought could only happen in Nairobi or abroad.
In a hospital once known only for basic care, a medical milestone has just been carved one stitch, one heartbeat, and one brave decision at a time.
For months, he endured unbearable migraines and unpredictable seizures.
At 69, he feared the worst, but what he never expected was that the answer to his suffering lay right in Makueni.
Behind these walls, history was made. For the first time, a brain tumour was successfully removed in Makueni County, a feat once reserved for Nairobi’s top referral hospitals.
The high-risk operation lasted over six hours which was led by consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Muthoka Mativo and Dr. Angela Murunga.
Their mission: to remove a life-threatening tumor without compromising brain function.
For county health officials, this was more than a medical success; it was a policy vision realized.
The patient is now recovering steadily, surrounded not just by machines and medicine, but by the comfort of family, culture, and community. And for future patients, this operating room is no longer a last resort, but a first hope.
