The KCB Chess Club, an eight-time champion, is asserting its dominance in the 2024/2025 Kenya Chess Premier League.
With an unbeaten streak after nine rounds, the team leads the standings with 25 points.
Under the guidance of seasoned Candidate Master and head coach Benjamin Magana, the “bankers” showcased their strength over the weekend. They secured a commanding 4.5-0.5 victory against Nairobi Chess Academy (NACHA) and fought to a hard-earned 2.5-2.5 draw against long-time rivals Equity Bank.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Coach Magana praised their unity and determination:
“We have built great momentum, and the players are hungry for victory. Staying unbeaten in this league is never easy, but our focus and discipline have made the difference. The goal is clear: we want to bring home a ninth title.” Said coach Magana
Rising star Elizabeth Cassidy has been a key contributor this season, demonstrating remarkable poise and consistency
“Playing alongside top players has pushed me to improve fast. Every match is a learning experience, and I am proud to contribute to the team’s success. I know the season is still far from over, but we want to continue winning to put KCB on the map. Not just in Kenya, but also in the world.” She shared her thoughts:
In the intense clash with Equity, Patrick Kawuma triumphed over KCB’s Joseph Methu on board one, while Robert McLigeyo and Mark Nyola settled for a draw on board two.
Martin Njoroge and Hawi Kaloki secured vital wins for KCB on boards three and four, defeating Kyle Kuka and Sasha Mongeli, respectively. However, Equity’s Jadon Simiyu evened the score by overcoming Joyce Nyaruai on board five, resulting in a tied match.
The previous day, KCB delivered a stellar performance, crushing NACHA 4.5-0.5. Coach Magana set the tone with a win against Hillary Sagwa on board one. Ian Mutuge and Hugh Misiko dominated their opponents, Aguda Lwanga and Trevor Mulindi, on boards two and four, respectively. Brian Irungu drew with Adol Makuach on board three, while Elizabeth Cassidy sealed the victory with a decisive win over Bella Nashipae on board five.
