Kenyans are set to benefit from improved internet access, lower connectivity costs and enhanced digital services following the launch of the Africa Broadband Mapping System.

Broadcasting Principal Secretary Stephen Isaboke says the initiative will improve data collection and strengthen transparency by making broadband information publicly available and attract private sector investment.

The Africa Broadband Mapping System is a continental initiative spearheaded by the International Telecommunication Union in collaboration with the European Commission and the Communications Authority of Kenya.

Kenya is among 11 countries in the Sub-Saharan Africa region implementing the program which aims to harmonize and validate publicly accessible broadband maps.

These will help policymakers identify infrastructure gaps and design data-driven policies to inform expansion of internet connectivity.

The initiative also integrates broadband data with other sectors among them energy, transport, health and education to accelerate digital transformation.

The government has pledged to earmark more resources and leverage partnerships to sustain the system including training on geospatial information systems.
