Kenya, US reaffirm commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties

President William Ruto and United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio have reaffirmed commitment of both nations to strengthening diplomatic ties and advancing shared interests.

According to a statement, the discussions centered on key regional and global issues, with particular emphasis on peace and security in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Both leaders underscored the importance of the joint efforts led by the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in de-escalating tensions and fostering a sustainable peace process in the region.

“Secretary Rubio and I also discussed regional peace and security, particularly the situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). We emphasised the crucial role of the EAC-SADC joint-led process in de-escalating tensions and advancing peace efforts.” President Ruto said.

They emphasized the necessity of appointing facilitators, implementing ceasefire agreements, and pursuing a broader political resolution to the crisis.

Additionally, the conversation addressed the situation in the Republic of the Sudan, where Kenya has been playing a pivotal role in facilitating dialogue among key stakeholders.

Secretary Rubio and his Kenyan counterpart discussed ongoing efforts to provide a platform for political parties, civil society organizations, and other actors to engage in discussions aimed at preventing further instability and guiding Sudan towards sustainable peace.

“Additionally, we discussed the situation in the Republic of the Sudan and Kenya’s crucial role in providing a platform for key stakeholders including political parties, civil society, and other actors to engage in a process aimed at stopping the tragic slide of Sudan into anarchy and ensuring a pathway towards sustainable peace.” The President said.
