Kibos Sugar and Allied Industries Limited has officially taken over the operations of Chemelil Sugar Company, following the conclusion of a competitive leasing process.

The transition follows the conclusion of a competitive leasing process, as announced by Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, aimed at injecting private sector efficiency into ailing state-owned sugar mills.

According to a statement, Jassi Chatthe, Director of Kibos Sugar, assumed control of the ailing mill Saturday morning where he met with workers and farmers at the factory to discuss the roadmap for revitalizing the company, which has faced prolonged operational challenges.

Many praised the government’s decision to lease out struggling sugar factories, viewing the move as a step toward reviving the region’s economy.
