January inflation rate rises to 3.3pc

Kenyans experienced a significantly higher cost of some and services in January this year when compared to the same period last year.

Latest data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) indicate that headline inflation rate was 3.3pc higher when compared to the same period last year.

“The price increase was primarily driven by rising prices in the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages category 6.1pc and Transport category 0.7pc over the same period,” said MacDonald Obudho.

The January inflation rate was similarly higher than December last year when inflation rate stood at 3pc.

However, there were ease in prices as Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and other fuels declined by 1.6pc.

“These three divisions together account for over 57pc of the total weight across the 13 major expenditure categories,” he added
