Jose Jay, a 28-year-old barber and gospel singer from Donholm, emerged the champion of the first-ever Next Superstar Kenya competition.
In a live finale held over the weekend at Charter Hall, Jose Jay claimed the grand prize of KSh 1 million.
The win was the culmination of a 14-week contest that began in May, which saw thousands of hopefuls enter and ultimately narrowed to six finalists.
Beyond Jose Jay, the final round featured Brenda Morii, Albert Okumu, Andy Saharan, Jambia, and Rennic.
In the final standings:
Rennic was named first runner-up and awarded a brand-new motorbike.
Jambia took third place, receiving rare jewellery valued at KSh 150,000.
Reflecting on his win, Jose Jay spoke of persistence. He said he had tried his hand at many competitions before without making it to the top.
“This time, I told myself to try once more, and I’m grateful to God because He has shown me prayers are answered,” he said.
Further adding that the platform gave him exposure, and he hopes Next Superstar Kenya will continue to uplift young talent.
“Music is my life, and I’ll keep doing it for as long as I live.”
Commenting on the significance of the competition, Collins Okoth, Director of Strategy and Planning at the Kenya Film Commission, said the show is a strong example of how the creative sector can empower youth. He noted that the government is increasingly recognising the creative economy as a key growth sector, and is putting policies and partnerships in place to support it.
The grand finale, hosted by Amina Rabar and Eddie Butita, featured performances from guest acts, showcasing the wide talent base in Kenya’s music scene.
