Morocco stuns Spain in  World Cup U-20 opener

Morocco got their FIFA under-20World Cup campaign off to a flying start after thrashing football powerhouse Spain 2-0 in a group C match played on Sunday night at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago, Chile.

Following a barren first stanza, The Young Atlas Lions resumed the match invigorated, and it only took 9 minutes for Yassir Zabiri to put them ahead following an assist from Gessime Yassine.

Yassine was the man of the match, as he extended the North Africans’ lead four minutes later after connecting a neat pass from Othmane Maamma.

Despite enjoying much possession, the Spanish side found it hard to break Morocco’s permeable backline, with the only 95th-minute goal being ruled out for an offside.

In another Group C match, Brazil and Mexico shared spoils in a 2-2 draw.

Defending champions Argentina eased past Cuba with a comfortable 3-1 win, while Italy saw off Australia 1-0 in group D matches played on Monday morning .

African Champions South Africa takes on France today in Group E as Nigeria battles Norway in Group F.

Morocco  returns to action on 2nd October against Brazil as Spain will face Mexico on Wednesday.
