Lawmakers now want the expiration period of the Equalization Fund which period lapses in 2030 extended by a further 10 years claiming the fund is yet to realize its goal as enshrined in the 2010 constitution.

During the debate on the Bill, MPs attributed delays in implementation of the fund and corruption in counties to derailed development in 14 marginalized counties further calling for streamlining of the management of the fund.

According to MPs corruption within County administrations has significantly impeded the effective utilization of the Equalisation Fund.

The members also want the criteria on what counties benefit from the fund amended to minimize wastage.

The Equalization Fund Administration Bill 2023 proposes that the Fund remains in force for a further non-renewable term of 10 years from the date upon which the Fund would have lapsed in 2030.

Beneficiaries of the fund are Turkana, Lamu, Mandera, Wajir, Marsabit, Samburu, West Pokot, Tana River, Narok, Kwale, Garissa, Kilifi, Taita Taveta and Isiolo.
