Kwale County Governor Fatuma Achani has embarked on an ambitious multibillion water project that aims to end perennial water shortages experienced in Diani a tourist destination.
The 1.4 billion water project dubbed Ukunda Water supply project funded by the world bank and implemented by Kwale water and Sewerage Company limited is expected to end water shortages in Ukunda, Diani, Tiwi, and Checkpoint areas in Matuga Subcounty.
The Water project in Diani, primarily focuses on drilling 9 boreholes, constructing storage tanks, and upgrading existing pipelines to address the area’s water shortages aiming to provide clean drinking water to the 200,000 local population and tourists.
The Mabokoni Tank is 90% complete while the transmission pipeline from the boreholes to the tank is expected to be complete in 6 months.
The project has a capacity of producing 10 million liters of water daily, serving 200,000 people, with an expected 6,000 metered connections.
The project upon completion in October 2025 is expected to be a game changer in curbing current water supply challenges in the targeted areas.
In his speech during the project inspection tour in Mabokoni County Executive Member for Water Services Hemedi Mwabudzo said that the project scope is to increase water production from the 9 drilled boreholes to the water reservoir in Mabokoni to boost supply and satisfy Ukunda, Diani, Tiwi Kombani and Check Point regions along the Lunga Lunga-Likoni road.
Mwabudzo further said once the project is complete at the end of this year more than 6,000 customers will be connected.
“This is a major water supply project intended to combine the already existing line from Magodzoni boreholes in Tiwi with an intention to supply sufficient water to the residents in Ukunda, Diani, Tiwi Kombani and Check Point. Once complete this will bring to an end the long time water perennial experienced in the named regions,” said Mwabudzo.
Managing Director for Kwale Water & Sewerage Company Melubo Parmet affirmed that the project will enhance water flow efficiency by providing a volume of 10 million litres in a day.
“The project will have a 10 million litres volume capacity in a day, which is enough to supply the target areas. Once complete the residents of Ukunda, Tiwi, Kombani and Check Point areas will be in access to an abundant supply of water daily,” said Parmet”
Water availability to the residents is among the key priority agenda Achani’s administration, so far 17 dams have been constructed in arid and semi arid areas of Kinango and LungaLunga Since the Governor took office in August 2022 with 40 boreholes drilled for the residents of the lower region of matuga and Msambweni Sub-counties.
