Sawe ,Wanjiru deliver double win for Kenyans in Berlin Marathon

Kenyans Sebastian Sawe and Rosemary Wanjiru delivered a Kenyan double as they emerged the winners of the 51st Berlin Marathon on Sunday in Germany .

Sawe clocked 2 hours 2 minutes and 16 seconds for his 2nd career World major marathon win after winning London marathon in April this year.

Running his overall 3rd marathon ,the 29year old was ahead of the World record pace at the 21km mark running 60:16 and was alone for almost the last 10km after breaking away from the lead group and went on for the victory .

Japanese Akira Akasaki finished 2nd in 2:06:16 while Ethiopian Chimdessa Debele settled for bronze in 2:06:57.

Wanjiru won her  2nd  World Major Marathon  since  claiming the Tokyo Marathon in 2023 ,breaking a 7 year Ethiopian dominance of the race in the streets of Berlin, crossing the finish line in 2 hours 21 minutes and 5 seconds ,followed by Dera Dida and Azmera Gebru both from Ethiopia who finished and and 3rd in 2:21.08 and 2:21.29 respectively.

Viola Cheptoo of Kenya finished 4th .

It was the 1st Kenyan double win of the race since Eliud Kipchoge and Gladys Cherono attained the feat in 2017.
