Running his 2nd marathon career race, Sebastian Sawe saw off a strong field to win the men’s London marathon in 2 hours, 2 minutes and 27 seconds, his 2nd marathon victory after winning the Valencia marathon last December.
The 30-year-old Kenyan pulled away from a leading group of nine runners about 90 minutes into the race and finished in 2 hours, 2 minutes and 27 seconds, the 2nd fastest ever London marathon time.
Pre-race favourite Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda, who was debuting in the London Marathon, finished 2nd in 2:3:37, while another Kenyan, Alexander Mitiso Munyao, settled for the bronze medal in 2:4:20.
4-time London marathon Eliud Kipchoge, finished a distant 6th in 2 hours, 5 minutes and 25 seconds.
Joyciline Jepkosgei won silver in the women’s race in 2 hours, 18 minutes and 44 seconds, behind Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa, who won with a new women’s only world record of 2:15:50, shattering Paula Radcliffe’s 26-year-old world record.
Assefa, the Olympic silver medallist, pulled away from Jepkosgei, to clinch her first London Marathon win after finishing second to Peres Jepchirchir last year.
Olympic champion Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands, finished 3rd, clocking 2:19:00, while Kenya’s Vivian Cheruiyot, settled for a 5th position in 2 hrs, 22 mins and 32 secs.
The race was the 3rd in the Abbott World Marathon Major series, which now comprises of 7 races.
