Expect heavy rains and flooding this week

The rainfall is expected to persist until the end of the week

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rainfall across the country for the next one week.

The latest advisory valid from April 2 to April 8 comes days after heavy downpours last week accompanied by strong winds left a trail of destruction in Nairobi County.

Many roads across the city were flooded, including parts of the Nairobi Expressway, causing widespread traffic disruptions.

The weatherman Monday cautioned the rains may lead to potential flooding in certain areas, urging residents to remain vigilant.

The affected areas to experience widespread rainfall are Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Southeast lowlands, Coast, Northeast, and Northwest regions.

“Stay prepared for potential flooding in these areas,” KMD said.

The counties of Turkana, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, Garissa, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale, will however experience high average daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C.

Residents in the areas have been urged to stay hydrated.

“Night-time temperatures are expected to remain high, surpassing 25°C, particularly along the Coast and in Northeastern Kenya” the forecast states.

The rainfall is expected to persist until the end of the week.

Kenyans had in February been warned to expect heavy rains throughout April and higher-than-usual temperatures. The peak was predicted to be in April for most regions, except over the Coastal Strip where the peak is expected in May.
