The University of Nairobi (UoN) on Friday marked its 73rd graduation ceremony with a call to strengthen innovation, entrepreneurship, and digital skills among learners as the institution reaffirmed its commitment to shaping globally minded graduates.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Jesang Hutchinson said the university has deliberately reimagined education to prepare students as innovators who think globally but act locally.

“At the University of Nairobi, we have deliberately reimagined education to equip learners with entrepreneurship, digital, and critical thinking skills, attributes that prepare one to be a global citizen and an innovator who acts locally but thinks globally,” he said.

Prof. Hutchinson underscored UoN’s role in Kenya’s and Africa’s transformation agenda, noting that despite global geopolitical and economic challenges, the institution has successfully met most of its targets in teaching, learning, research, and community service.

“The University of Nairobi’s commitment to contributing to the transformation agenda of our country and continent remains unwavering. This is reflected in our audacity to believe that UoN can continue to press on in its trajectory to become a globally competitive university that is still relevant in transforming society,” he said.

Despite global geopolitical and economic challenges, Prof. Hutchinson expressed pride in the institution’s achievements across multiple sectors.

“I am pleased to report to our stakeholders that the University of Nairobi has successfully met most of its targets in teaching and learning, community service, and research,” he noted.

“We remain committed to nurturing graduates who are not only academically excellent but also socially responsible and innovative, ready to tackle the challenges of today and tomorrow,” he added.

The ceremony saw hundreds of students graduate, adding to the institution’s legacy of producing leaders and professionals across diverse sectors.

Recently, UoN was named among 11 universities recognised by the Kenya National Innovation Agency for its support in nurturing student-led innovation hubs.

The institution has also produced over 1,000 research papers published in refereed high-impact journals in the past year.
