Vendors in Lamu Town spent Thursday preparing their stalls and stocking up for the large crowds expected ahead of the official opening ceremony of the 2025 Lamu Cultural Festival, scheduled for 8 p.m. at Mkunguni Square.
The festival, which will run until Saturday, is expected to draw between 20,000 and 30,000 visitors, according to the Lamu County Government.
“We are all set to host the 23rd edition of the Lamu Cultural festival we welcome you all to come experience the best of Swahili culture and hospitality. This year we project to host between 20,000 to 30,000 visitors in Lamu,” County Governor Issa Timamy said.
By midday, Mkunguni Square and the surrounding streets were already bustling as traders arranged displays of traditional Swahili food, handmade crafts, clothing, spices and coastal artefacts.
Many of the vendors are part of the more than 40 women’s groups supported by grants from the county government to provide traditional Swahili cuisine during the festival.
Governor Timamy has previously noted that the festival creates significant economic opportunities across the local value chain, benefiting food vendors, boat operators, artisans and accommodation providers.
Excitement continued to build throughout the day as organisers finalised the set-up for the ceremony, which will mark the start of a packed three-day programme.
The festival will feature popular attractions including donkey races, dhow competitions, beach football, local performances and a street bazaar.
With visitors arriving by road, air and boat, security agencies have increased their presence around the town ahead of the evening event.
“Let me assure everyone that it is safe, we have made arrangements with our security agencies to ensure your safety on your way and during your stay in Lamu,” Governor Timamy added.
