Wanyonyi and Kosgei storm to victories with meeting records in London

Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Phanuel Kosgei registered victories in style with new meeting records at the 11th stop of the Diamond League in London on Saturday.

18-year-old Kosgei outsprinted Olympic champion Josh Kerr of Britain, crossing the finish line in a new meeting record of 3 minutes 29.37 seconds, shattering the previous record of 3:30.20, set by Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco in August 2000.

Kerr finished 2nd in 3:29.37, ahead of Portuguese Isaac Nader, who finished 3rd in 3:31.55.

Wanyonyi won the two-lap race in 1 minute 42.00 seconds, 0.22 seconds ahead of reigning world champion Marco Arop of Canada, who finished 2nd, while Max Birgin of Britain completed the podium positions.

Margaret Akidor finished a distant 9th in the 5000m, the only Kenyan woman in action today.

The next meeting will be held in Silesia, Poland, on 16th August.
